Pros & Cons Of Dating A Single Parent By Wendy Miller Love & The Single Parent

Children of mothers who return to work while the children are infants and toddlers, fare the same behaviorally and academically compared with children whose mothers stay home. In one study, kids from single-parent families, whose mothers worked, had better academic scores and fewer behavioral problems than did children whose mothers did not work. Every situation involves trade-offs, and they often go unrecognized at the time. In a common refrain, the grown child of a single, working mom reported that he was glad that his mom was busy all the time. These parents were hyper-involved in their lives, including their schoolwork and schedules. This overbearing participation produced problems between parent and child.

Society need to support families more weather single or couples. Good families supported by good schools create good people. Cooperation, caring and kindness are what makes good kids however the family is made up. Teach the to respect themselves and others, cut alcohol, violence gambling and drugs out of the equation. Similarly, middle-income and upper-income families can deduct child care expenses from their income taxes, while single mothers on welfare are eligible for government subsidized child care.

Then, depending on the amount of comprehension of the children, some may end up resenting the new relationship if it was hidden from them for so long. Although most suggest waiting to tell the children, it’s another teeter-totter of when and how it’s most appropriate. Groth’s best advice is to wait at least six months before introducing them to the children. Personally, I can see why since an early introduction without knowing if this person would make a long-term partner gives the child unstable relationships in an already broken home. When a couple thought they would work out but ultimately split up, Ungar suggests that children remain in contact with the ex in order to transition smoothly.

Depending on their age, acting secretive may only bring more questions. There’s no reason to hide the fact that you’ve decided to start dating, according to Lanae St.John, a certified sex coach whose work includes counseling parents on sex ed. “Be upfront,” she says, and consider using it as a teachable moment with older kids. “When you get to a point where you’re seeing someone special, take the opportunity with your children to discuss your special someone’s qualities and characteristics, and why those are essential to you.” Dating—and the possibility of rejection that comes with it—can test even those with unbreakable self-esteem.

Tell prospective dates you’ve got kids as soon as possible.

Together, these forces have fueled the growth of single parenthood during the postwar period. There is a lot to know and understand about girls who were raised by single mothers. After overcoming hardships throughout life, we are determined to achieve only the best for ourselves. My major concern about the new proposals is that they reduce the amount of time mothers spend with their children. The loss of parental time could mean less parental involvement and supervision.

My mother made it a point to not bring a plethora of men around me, and I respected that. Aside from the fact that he makes my mother the happiest I’ve ever seen her, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I’ve grown to respect him more than most people in my life. Both of your parents are at your disposal for anything you need — questions about homework, questions about life, quality time, etc. Even if the child sees/see both of their parents often, there is always time when one isn’t around.

Unfortunately, we cannot rule out the possibility that the gap stems from some unmeasured difference between one- and two-parent families, such as alcoholism, child abuse, or parental indifference.
