The Truth About Interracial Relationships, 50 Years After ‘Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner’

— of South Asian women’s lives and personhood in Kumail’s pursuit of a white woman. The younger you are, the easier it is to find a partner for interracial dating. The twenty to thirty year old set are generally very casual and already have a wide mixture of multi-cultural and multi-racial friends.

Prior to that, I had shared my body with White Brasilians and Argentineans. This made me feel like my growth had come full circle, as I struggled growing up in a predominately White Jersey suburb to feel like interracial dating was an option for a young Black woman. While young Black men certainly enjoyed relationships with young White women in my town, Black girls rarely were seen exploring the same types of relationships. But the opportunities weren’t equal or treated the same.

Don’t be afraid to talk about race and racial inequality

I wasn’t like, “Oh my God, black women don’t want me,” because I’m not entitled to any woman. But there were white girls at school who were fucking with me and that’s who I went with. Minhaj’s Homecoming King special treads similar territory, as he spends a good deal of time relaying how his desire for a white girl in high school didn’t live up to the romantic expectations in his head . All three comedians are adept at talking about race and their experience of being raised Muslim in this country, and can’t necessarily be expected to represent experiences — or desires — besides their own. But nevertheless, they do all end up appealing to a certain, familiar fantasy of manhood. And this fantasy doesn’t have much room for South Asian women.

And yet, couples comprising the two most common types of interracial relationships are still likely to encounter negative attitudes about them. As these data show us, Black women likely perceive Black male-White female unions as a threat to their own ability to find a quality mate. Likewise, Asian males tend to look at White male-Asian female couples as a threat for the same reason. The researchers concede that mate competition is only one of many factors shaping our attitudes about interracial relationships. For instance, they note that common stereotypes about the relative masculinity and femininity of Asians, Blacks, and Whites also play into attitudes about mixed-race marriages. Thus, an Asian man who buys into the stereotype that White men are more masculine would naturally feel threatened when he sees them with Asian women that he could otherwise be dating.

Though I date smart enough humans to not ever be asked to be the voice of my entire race, I still get asked how I feel about rappers using the N-word, and who has access to it. This conversation doesn’t have to be uncomfortable if you’re certain of your stance, but if you waiver, they will be forever confused and your weighing-in on the subject can save them from physical harm and embarrassment in the future. The same goes for the opposite side of the spectrum. A white woman can blindly fall in love with a black man for who he is, but society will never let her forget that she’s DATING A BLACK MAN. That’s just how it is. If you’ve been doing it long enough you’re used to it and it doesn’t faze you because it’s all you know. And all you can do is continue not giving a fuck and hope it won’t be that way someday.

Anyway I think I’m trying to say that if an Asian man in America is having trouble finding a girl just have a little more patience and maybe go visit Europe for a confidence boost if not a Euro-love. America is probably the only place on Earth where white men are still going to have much better luck getting a date than an Asian but that’s not going to last no matter how poorly Hollywood depicts Asian men. Are you only looking Green Singles to hook up with women that are hispanic? Blanqueamiento, branqueamento, or whitening, is a social, political, and economic practice used in many post-colonial countries to “improve the race” towards a supposed ideal of whiteness. The term blanqueamiento is rooted in Latin America and is used more or less synonymously with racial whitening. However, blanqueamiento can be considered in both the symbolic and biological sense.

Though it’s true that Woody Allen looks a lot different from Clark Gable or Brad Pitt, 40 years after Annie Hall it’s actually become pretty commonplace to see “quirky” straight white men like him as romantic heroes. Allen — despite his daughter’s public allegations of sexual abuse — is still making Oscar-nominated movies about those types of characters, and his influence is all over hit shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm and Louie. You can also see it across Apatow’s oeuvre, in films like Knocked Up. Apatow even produces a Netflix show that centers on an awkward, bespectacled white comedian named Paul Rust — and it’s simply called Love. Another black seventh grader who participated in the study, 13-year-old Chantay, admitted she, and others in her extended family, had a double standard regarding interracial dating.

South Asian women become the symbolic root of Kumail’s problems in the script, and white people appear to offer the solutions. For part of the season, viewers might be hoping that Dev will serendipitously reconnect with Sara, à la Richard Linklater’s Before Sunset, but alas, that fantasy never comes to be. Instead, Dev pursues an equally dreamlike romance with an Italian woman named Francesca, whom we also meet in that first episode. Francesca is not only white, but thin and conventionally beautiful, just like the women in the romantic movies Master of None admiringly references. Arielle Loren is the Editor-in-Chief of Corset, the go-to magazine for all things sexuality.

But despite these real-world examples of interracial relationships, a 2010 Pew Research Center report found that black women are the least likely group of women to marry, especially outside of their own race. In many ways, these romances push back against racial bias in the real world. In 2014, the online dating site OkCupid updated a study that found that of all the groups on its site, African-American women were considered less desirable than, and received significantly fewer matches than, women of other races. Later, Rae, in a chapter in her book, “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl” took that data head-on. “Black women and Asian men are at the bottom of the dating totem pole in the United States,” she wrote.

If you asked most of my friends, their packages tended to be small unless they were of Latin or Italian descent, but they made up for it in the oral sex arena. “She informed me she had started going out with an African-American … young man at her school. A young man that we knew, and that we liked a lot and it wasn’t that we didn’t so much want them dating because of race per se. We didn’t know if she had really thought about some of the cultural differences that there may be and so we talked about it in that respect … not that it’s right or wrong, good or bad, just different,” said Luke’s father Gary. Anderson Cooper and Soledad O’Brien interviewed a panel of parents whose children participated in the AC360° study and were vocal about the issue of interracial dating.

Many of my French friends – men and women alike – have waited to meet someone special for their first time, didn’t just want to get rid of their virginity, and have never had one night stand. Believe it or not, at the opposite of all the stereotypes, French people are much more about love than sex. It’s in our genes and it’s socially accepted in France. A Frenchwoman is expected to play her feminine side, and be “admired” for her beauty and wit among other qualities. In Homecoming King, Hasan Minhaj deconstructs the pursuit of whiteness more directly.

The mere exposure effect then predicts that Black participants should show more warmth toward Black male-White female couples because they are far more common than the reverse. Likewise, Asian participants should feel more warmth for White male-Asian female couples for the same reason. Meaning when y’all go out, she’s not looking for you to “buy out the bar” and “light the club up with sparklers.” She doesn’t care about any of that shit. White girls have WAY less restrictions in the bedroom than “other races.” You can basically do whatever, wherever with them. Who wants to be at the pool with a girl who’s only concern is not getting her weave wet.
